What is an equipment appraisal?
An equipment appraisal is an independent, documented determination of what machinery or equipment is worth for a specific purpose, most commonly to support financing, insurance, tax, or legal decisions. When it's used for a business loan, the appraisal gives the lender an objective, third-party value they can rely on to set the loan-to-value ratio and confirm the collateral adequately supports the amount borrowed, rather than relying on book value or what's listed on internal accounting records.
A proper equipment appraisal report identifies the asset (make, model, year, serial number), documents its condition and maintenance history, analyzes comparable sales and market data, and applies a recognized valuation methodology to reach a concluded value. Depending on the intended use, that value may be expressed as fair market value, orderly liquidation value, or another standard the lender specifies.
What lenders typically look for
Lenders reviewing equipment as loan collateral generally want a report that addresses:
- The equipment's identity, age, and physical condition, verified through inspection or supporting documentation.
- Market demand and comparable sales data supporting the concluded value.
- Remaining useful life and how it affects resale or liquidation value.
- A valuation methodology and appraiser credentials that meet the lender's underwriting standards.
